History of Norwood East

Heritage Buildings
Heritage Resources

Norwood East was part of the City of St. Boniface when it became part of the City of Winnipeg which came into legal existence on January 1, 1972.

The neighbourhood of Norwood East was settled after the turn-of-the-century and developed into the Anglophone section of St. Boniface. The oldest home in the neighbourhood, on Kenny Street, dates to 1899. Most of the modest, single-family dwellings in the northwest section were built prior to World War I; the remainder of the area is a mixture of construction dates up to the 1970s when most of the residential construction ceased. Commercial property is concentrated along the major thoroughfares of the area - St. Mary's Road and Marion Street - as are the apartment blocks.

The clubhouse of the St. Boniface Golf Club, a private, 18-hole course established in 1931, is located in this neighbourhood (100 Youville Street). [1]
