History of Minto

Minto was part of the City of Winnipeg when it amalgamated with the surrounding municipalities to form the City of Winnipeg which came into legal existence on January 1, 1972.

Minto is a largely residential district and an important component of the City's West End. While permanent residential development did occur prior to 1900 - and there still exist some 19th century houses - most of the neighbourhood was established after 1900, during the City's expansion period. Comprised mainly of modest, single-family dwellings, there are examples of the other popular housing type, apartment blocks, of varying ages located throughout the neighbourhood.

One of its unique features is the industrial development located along Erin and Wall streets with a spur line of the Canadian Pacific Railway running through its centre. There are still active factories and warehouses located here.
