History of Centennial

Centennial was part of the City of Winnipeg when it amalgamated with surrounding municipalities to form the City of Winnipeg which came into legal existence on January 1, 1972.

Centennial is one of the older areas of downtown Winnipeg; its early development in the 1880s saw dwellings and churches and later the construction of large warehouses on its eastern end. Although infill housing, multi-tenant blocks and other newer construction have occurred, the neighbourhood still boast some of the downtown's oldest 19th century dwellings along many of its streets.
