Lord Selkirk Park was part of the City of Winnipeg when it amalgamated with surrounding municipalities to form the City of Winnipeg which came into legal existence on January 1, 1972.

Lord Selkirk Park is a mixed neighbourhood in the downtown area. It developed in the 1880s and 1890s as factories and warehouses located on both sides of the expanding Canadian Pacific Railway yards stretching west from Main Street. Modest residential development also occurred as the labourers and their families sought to locate close to their employment. The neighbourhood also includes several blocks of Selkirk Avenue, the North End's premier commercial thoroughfares and the location of dozens of immigrant stores and businesses. Main Street, and its hotels and stores, also has a presence in this neighbourhood.
