Griffin was part of the City of Transcona when it became part of the City of Winnipeg which came into legal existence on January 1, 1972.

The Griffin neighbourhood is a small area in northern Transcona, named after the major industry in the area, Griffin Canada, 2500 Day Street. Costing over $5 million to construct in the late 1950s, the Griffin Canada railway wheel producing plant has continued to be one of Transcona's leading manufacturers for over 50 years.
